When Hungarian tribes came into the Carpathian Basin they were a nomadic people who herded sheep and lived in tents called yurts. The covering of the yurt was made of felt, a material made of wool.
We tried our hand at making felt by making a ball using wool, soap, and water.
Men wore a leather pouch in which they put their fire-making implements, a needle and thread, and other small objects they needed to keep with themselves. The flap of this pouch was often decorated with a gold and silver plate bearing beautiful designs. We chose one of the designs to color, to put in our folder.
Women wore a form of jewelry in their braids called a braid disk. Archeologists have found many different samples of these. The one some of us are coloring bears an image of a mythical creature, a Turul bird, which appears in an ancient Hungarian legend.
